Metric Bearings vs Inch Bearings: How to Identify the Right Type

Sep 19,2026 | Lumi Manufacturering Technology

When customers look for bearing replacements, one common problem is confusion between metric bearings and inch bearings. The two types may look similar, but their dimensions are based on different measurement systems. Choosing the wrong type can cause poor fit, unstable rotation, noise, vibration, or early failure.

Metric bearings are measured in millimeters. They are widely used in motors, fans, pumps, gearboxes, automation equipment, robots, appliances, and general industrial machinery. Common metric bearing series include 6000, 6200, 6300, 6800, 6900, MR, MF, and 67 series. For example, 608ZZ, 6201ZZ, 6202-2RS, 685ZZ, and MR126ZZ are all common metric bearing models.

Inch bearings are measured in inches. They are commonly used in products designed for the U.S. market, older machinery, RC models, special tools, pulleys, rollers, and some customized mechanical systems. Common inch-size bearing models include R series bearings, such as R2, R3, R4, R6, and R8. These models are often selected when the shaft or housing is designed with inch dimensions.

The easiest way to identify the right bearing type is to measure three key dimensions: inner diameter, outer diameter, and width. If the dimensions are standard millimeter sizes, the bearing is usually metric. If the dimensions match inch sizes, it may be an inch bearing. However, some bearings have very close dimensions, so careful checking is still necessary.

For OEM buyers and distributors, correct identification is very important. A bearing that is only slightly different in size may still fit loosely or too tightly, causing performance problems. This is especially true for miniature bearings, where even a small dimensional difference can affect rotation smoothness and service life.

At LUMI Bearing, we can help customers identify bearing models by size, photo, sample, drawing, or application information. We supply miniature bearings, small deep groove ball bearings, metric bearings, inch bearings, stainless steel bearings, flanged bearings, and OEM bearing solutions.

If you are not sure whether your bearing is metric or inch size, LUMI Bearing can provide professional selection support. Choosing the correct bearing type from the beginning can improve installation accuracy, reduce replacement risk, and support stable long-term performance.
