C3 Bearing Clearance vs CN: Which One Should You Choose?

Sep 01,2026 | Lumi Manufacturering Technology

When choosing a bearing, many buyers focus on size, material, seal type, and price. However, internal clearance is also a very important factor. Two common clearance options are CN clearance and C3 clearance. Choosing the wrong clearance may cause noise, heat, unstable rotation, or shorter bearing life.

CN clearance is the standard internal clearance for most normal working conditions. It is commonly used in small motors, fans, smart appliances, precision instruments, office equipment, and general rotating systems. If the working temperature is normal, the speed is moderate, and the fit between shaft and housing is not too tight, CN is usually a safe choice. For applications that require low noise and smooth rotation, CN clearance is often preferred.

C3 clearance means the internal clearance is larger than CN. It is commonly used when the bearing may face higher temperature, higher speed, tighter shaft fit, or heavier operating conditions. During operation, heat and tight installation can reduce the internal clearance of the bearing. If the original clearance is too small, the bearing may become tight, generate heat, or fail early. In these cases, C3 clearance can provide more safety space during operation.

C3 bearings are often used in electric motors, high-speed fans, power tools, gear motors, pumps, and equipment with higher temperature rise. For example, if a motor runs for a long time and the shaft temperature increases, C3 clearance can help the bearing maintain smoother rotation after thermal expansion.

However, C3 is not always better than CN. If the application does not have high temperature or tight fitting, using C3 may increase vibration or noise. This is why bearing selection should be based on the real working condition, not only on price or availability.

For buyers, the simple rule is: choose CN clearance for normal precision and low-noise applications; choose C3 clearance for higher speed, higher temperature, tighter fit, or heavier working conditions.

At LUMI Bearing, we supply miniature bearings, small deep groove ball bearings, motor bearings, fan bearings, stainless steel bearings, and high-speed bearings with different clearance options, including CN and C3. Our team can help global customers choose the right clearance based on motor speed, load, temperature, installation fit, and noise requirements.

If you are not sure whether your application needs CN or C3, LUMI Bearing can provide professional bearing selection support before your order.
